Funding agricultural and food research in the United States

Presentation to the Funding Agriculture and Food Research in Canada Workshop, Ottawa, Canada, April 29 (2003)

Agriculture and food research has and continues to undergo rapid change. It has broadened to encompass health, environment, and bio-based product and life-science innovation. As a result, new opportunities to partner with other sectors in the economy such as health, pharmaceuticals, energy and manufacturing are being sought out. In addition, research in Canada has also recently undergone a dramatic shift from project-based funding to initiative-based funding. This workshop is an opportunity to: i) collectively focus on the future needs for funding of our research community; ii)build on a much needed coordinated collaborative effort and iii) develop a comprehensive set of next steps to effectively address our needs.
